Chennai: In yet another instance of his confrontation with the DMK dispensation in Tamil Nadu, Governor RN Ravi on Monday refused to read the customary address prepared by the government on ‘factual and moral grounds.’
Governor Ravi expressed his refusal to read the address, highlighting numerous passages with which he fundamentally disagrees on both factual and moral grounds. He emphasized that endorsing such content would be a breach of constitutional principles. He also underscored his disappointment at the state government’s disregard for his repeated requests to accord due respect to the national anthem by playing it at the beginning and end of the address.
Initiating his speech with verses from Thirukkural, Governor Ravi swiftly conveyed his dissent and promptly concluded his address, leaving the assembly chamber. Later, Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M Appavu took the responsibility of reading out the Tamil interpretation of the Governor’s speech, marking an unusual turn of events in the state’s legislative proceedings.
