Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the golden jubilee celebrations of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the entity behind the renowned dairy brand Amul, in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
During the event, the Prime Minister took a walkthrough of an exhibition showcasing various facets of Amul’s journey and unveiled the Golden Jubilee Coffee Table Book. Noteworthy among the displays was a section featuring Amul’s creative advertisements, some of which depicted the Prime Minister, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and flagship initiatives such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Make in India.
Addressing the audience, Prime Minister Modi congratulated everyone on GCMMF’s 50th anniversary, hailing the federation’s transformation from a sapling planted by Gujarat’s farmers to a global giant.
Emphasising Amul’s unparalleled stature among Indian brands, the Prime Minister highlighted its extensive global reach, with products exported to over 50 countries. He lauded the federation’s achievements, including a network of over 18,000 milk cooperative committees, serving 36,000 farmers, and processing more than 3.5 crore litres of milk daily. Additionally, he noted the federation’s significant contributions, including online payments exceeding Rs 200 crore to livestock breeders.
Prime Minister Modi recalled Amul’s roots back to the Kheda Milk Union under Sardar Patel’s guidance, which later evolved into GCMMF with the expansion of cooperatives in Gujarat.
Furthermore, he underscored the remarkable growth of India’s dairy sector, citing a nearly 60 percent increase in milk production and a 40 percent rise in per capita milk availability over the past decade. He noted that the Indian dairy sector is growing at a rate of 6 percent annually, significantly outpacing the global average of 2 percent.
