Taipei: Taiwan’s Labour Minister Hsu Ming-chun has issued an apology following criticism over her remarks regarding the recruitment of Indian migrant workers. Hsu faced backlash after appearing on an online talk show with host Wang Shih-chin on February 29, where she stated that the Labor ministry would prioritize recruiting Indian workers from northeastern Bharat due to their skin color and dietary habits being closer to those of Taiwanese people.
She further elaborated that individuals from this region, predominantly Christians, are skilled in manufacturing, construction, and farming, as per assessments by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
However, speaking at a legislative hearing on Tuesday, Hsu expressed regret for her “inaccurate” choice of words, emphasizing that Taiwan’s labor policies are designed with equality in mind and do not discriminate against either local or foreign workers, news agencies reported
Taiwan and Bharat had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) last month, showcasing a willingness to make India a source of Taiwan’s migrant workforce.
