New Delhi: The National Council for Educational and Research Training (NCERT) is ushering in a significant change in the traditional report cards received by students. The introduction of a new ‘holistic progress card’ (HPC) aims to measure not only academic performance but also a child’s progress in interpersonal relationships, self-reflection, creativity, and emotional application in classrooms.
Developed by the Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development (PARAKH), a standard-setting body under NCERT, these HPCs are tailored for the foundational stage (Classes 1 and 2), preparatory stage (Classes 3 to 5), and middle stage (Classes 6 to 8), aligning with the suggestions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Report cards for the secondary stage (beyond Class 9) are still in preparation.
The HPC shifts away from relying solely on marks or grades for evaluating academic performance. Instead, it adopts a 360-degree evaluation approach.
Under the HPC model, students will undergo regular assessments through class activities, where they are active participants rather than passive learners. These activities will require students to apply various skills and competencies, allowing educators to gauge their understanding of concepts. The level of difficulty experienced by students while completing tasks will also be taken into account.
