Bharat deports first batch of illegal Myanmar migrants after revocation of visa-free movement policy

New Delhi: Bharat has deported the initial group of Myanmar nationals who entered the country illegally. Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced on Friday that Bharat has deported the first batch of Myanmar refugees who had sought asylum in Bharat following the military coup in 2021. Amid a situation similar to civil war in Myanmar, thousands of Myanmar nationals reportedly had crossed over into Bharat.

This action comes in the wake of Bharat’s recent termination of its visa-free border policy with Myanmar. Following the 2021 coup in Myanmar, the Home Ministry conducted an assessment which concluded that the influx of hundreds of Rohingya across the border was causing law and order issues in the region. Consequently, stringent measures were initiated against illegal immigration. Specific details regarding the number of individuals deported are not immediately available.

Bharat’s decision to terminate the visa-free movement policy with Myanmar for border citizens was announced last month, citing concerns related to national security. This decision was made shortly after the Home Minister Amit Shah revealed plans to erect a fence along the 1,643-km (1,020-mile) border with Myanmar.
