New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying has banned the sale and breeding of most ‘dangerous’ dog breeds, including Rottweiler, Pitbull, Terrier, Wolf dogs, and Mastiffs, for pets and other purposes. The ban will also cover crossbreeds of these breeds. This decision comes after a committee of experts and animal welfare bodies submitted a report in response to an order by the Delhi High Court.
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying has sent a letter to Chief Secretaries of all states, urging the local bodies to refrain from issuing licenses or permits for the sale and breeding of these dogs. They have also emphasized the need for sterilizing dogs of these breeds that are already kept as pets, to prevent further breeding. The action was taken by the Central government considering the report of the expert committee, which concluded that these breeds of dogs pose a danger to human life.
The breeds identified for the ban, including mixed and crossbreeds, are:
➤Pitbull Terrier
➤Tosa Inu
➤American Staffordshire Terrier
➤Fila Brasileiro
➤Dogo Argentino
➤American Bulldog
➤Boesboel
➤Kangal
➤Central Asian Shepherd Dog
➤Caucasian Shepherd Dog
➤South Russian Shepherd Dog
➤Tornjak, Sarplaninac
➤Japanese Tosa and Akita
➤Mastiffs
➤Rottweiler
➤Terriers
➤Rhodesian Ridgeback
➤Wolf Dogs
➤Canario
➤Akbash
➤Moscow Guard
➤Cane Corso
The petition, filed by an organization named The Legal Attorneys & Barristers Law Firm, had approached the Delhi High Court demanding that certain categories of dogs, including these, be banned and the licenses granted so far for breeding these dogs be cancelled. Based on this, the Delhi High Court directed the Central government to make a decision on banning the most dangerous breeds of dogs.
