Thiruvananthapuram: After the issue of fuel crisis in the state, the government has now rejected the purchase of vehicles for the police department. Citing economic crisis in the state as the reason, the Home Department did not accept the recommendation of Director General of Police (DGP), to purchase new vehicles for the police department.
According to the report given by the state DGP Sheikh Darvesh Sahib to the Home Department, about 60% of the current police vehicles are non-operational. It is mentioned in the report given by the DGP that the old vehicles are not in condition due to its long-term use and is a problem for the day-to-day operations of the police. The DGP hence recommends buying new vehicles to overcome this, according to the report. However, this proposal was rejected by the Home Department.
The government owes Rs 2000 crore to the owners of petrol and diesel pumps for supplying fuel to the police and government vehicles. The owners of the pumps have to get Rs 200 crore for refuelling police vehicles alone. The petrol pump owners had earlier taken a decision to stop fuel supply due to huge arrears they had to get from the government. Petrol pump owners had also written to the Chief Secretary and DGP seeking immediate intervention in payment of dues.
As the financial crisis worsened, the state police chief recently directed the police stations to limit the amount of fuel that police vehicles could fill up. The DGP report about the purchase of new police cars comes after DGP’s earlier order.
