Today, March 24, marks World Tuberculosis Day. This day was established to raise awareness about the disease and its treatment methods, with the goal of eradicating Tuberculosis through increased awareness. This year’s theme is ‘Yes! We Can End TB’.

Tuberculosis is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium Tuberculosis and was first discovered by Dr. Robert Koch. Because the disease is airborne, it can spread quickly from one person to another.

Treatment for Tuberculosis involves antibiotics. Those at higher risk of contracting tuberculosis include diabetics, HIV-infected individuals, malnourished individuals, and tobacco users. Symptoms of Tuberculosis include persistent cough, fever, and weight loss.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM TB

Ensure vaccination: Many countries administer the BCG vaccine to children to shield them from severe TB. Consult your doctor to confirm if vaccination is advised in your area.

Cover your cough or sneeze: Use a tissue or your elbow to contain germs and prevent them from dispersing into the air.

Maintain proper ventilation: Keep windows and doors open to promote the circulation of fresh air, particularly in crowded environments.

Enhance your immunity: Consume a nutritious diet packed with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to bolster your immune system.

Practice good hygiene: Regularly wash your hands with soap and water, especially after being in public spaces.

Seek testing if symptomatic: If you experience symptoms such as a persistent cough lasting over three weeks, fever, night sweats, weight loss, or fatigue, undergo testing promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to curb the spread of TB.
