Thrissur: Kalamandalam has opened its doors to boys for learning Mohiniyattam, marking a historic shift in gender inclusivity. Officials announced that admissions to all departments at Kalamandalam are now gender-neutral, following a unanimous decision in today’s board meeting. Inspired by the inclusion of girls in Kathakali, the board recognized the importance of providing boys access to Mohiniyattam. Additionally, three new courses in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi will be introduced to further diversify the curriculum.

The curriculum for each department will be determined by the Curriculum Committee. Admission into each department will be determined by the Admission Committee, based on individual aptitude and passion for the art form. Speaking on the institution’s commitment to gender equality, the Vice-Chancellor of Kalamandalam emphasized that it has always been a core value upheld by the institution. He made it clear that there would be no compromise on this principle.

Four government-appointed nominees including Dr. Neena Prasad, assumed their roles in the governing body on Wednesday. Subsequently, the governing body convened for a meeting. Renowned Mohiniyattam performer Kshemavathy, along with Dr. Neena Prasad, hailed the decision as a historic moment, as boys were granted the opportunity to learn Mohiniyattam at Kalamandalam.
