Thiruvananthapuram: A case has been registered against the principal and an employee of a special school accused of brutally assaulting an autistic student. The case has been lodged against Principal Sister Sheeja and staff member Rosy at the Sneha Bhavan special school in Vellarada, Thiruvananthapuram, under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act.
The victim, a 16-year-old resident of Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta, was allegedly subjected to severe beating by school staff. The abuse came to light when the child returned home for Easter holidays, and parents discovered marks of violence on their child’s body. Concerned, they promptly admitted the child to the Community Health Centre in Chathankary, where medical professionals confirmed signs of brutal beating. Hospital authorities, recognizing the severity of the situation, alerted both the police and Childline.
The student had been enrolled in the special school in Vellarada since June of the previous year and returned home just last Wednesday, displaying visible scars from the alleged abuse. Subsequently, the child’s parents filed a formal complaint against the school.
Initially, when questioned about the incident, school authorities claimed the child had wandered into a nearby house and had been assaulted there. However, upon further inquiry, they were unable to provide contact details, prompting the family to proceed with a formal complaint against the school.
