Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has once again witnessed a surge in electricity consumption, reaching an all-time high. The total consumption of electricity soared to 108.23 million units yesterday. Electricity consumption during the peak time from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. is also at a record level. 5,364 megawatts of electricity were used during peak time this year.
Despite a minor decrease of three units observed on Friday, the trend of escalating electricity consumption remains evident. Presently, the state’s daily electricity consumption exceeds 100 million units. In light of this exceptional situation, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has advised consumers to exercise restraint in their electricity usage.
It has been a record power consumption for two consecutive days. There is a decrease in water levels in the state’s dams. The self generated electricity is also being utilized twice. Faced with this situation, KSEB is proposing to reduce maximum electricity consumption at peak times.
The board is concerned about the excess power crisis in the state, worsened by the non-renewal of external power purchase agreements. KSEB has informed several times that alternative methods should be adopted . Currently, the KESB is trying to avoid power cuts by purchasing additional electricity from external sources at an extra cost.
