Thiruvananthapuram: In an all-party meeting held today, the government has unanimously decided to request Election Commission to conduct Kuttanad and Chavara by-elections along with assembly election which may be conducted by April 2021, informed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Election Commission had declared that the bypolls would be held in November.
However, the term of the present LDF government will expire in May and the Model Code of Conduct for nect election would be in force from April. This would only give five months to the new;y-elected MLAs. Also, conducting an election adhering to coronavirus protocol is expensive.
Hence the government decided to cancel the bypolls. The government would be requesting EC to cancel the bypolls.
