Kannur International Airport, grappling with financial difficulties, is exploring the possibility of transferring its management to the Tata Group. Privatization efforts are underway as the airport seeks to sell its operations to the Tata Group. Additionally, following the recent takeover of Thiruvananthapuram Airport by the Adani Group, they too have expressed interest in Kannur Airport.
The employees of Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL) have experienced a two-month delay in receiving their salaries. Presently, only a limited number of international flights are allowed to operate from Kannur. Furthermore, the domestic airlines operating from the airport have raised their fare prices, resulting in a decrease in passenger numbers.
At present, only Air India Express and IndiGo are providing services at Kannur Airport. The loan originally acquired for the construction of the airport amounted to rupees 2,350 crores, but it has now increased to rupees 1,100 crores, including accrued interest. The repayment period for the loan has also expired.
