From now on, to score high marks in Plus Two and SSLC exams, students have to cross one more hurdle. Education department of Kerala has planned to implement newspaper reading is made compulsory to score more marks in plus two and SSLC exams.

“Half of the 20% marks given at present as part of continuous assessment will be given for excellence in reading newspapers and books,” said General Education Minister V Sivankutty. The Minister said this while delivering the inaugural speech at the Reading Day function.

At present, 20 marks are granted in examinations with a maximum of 100 marks and 10 marks in those with a maximum of 50 marks for performance in co-curricular activities at the school level. It has been decided to grant 10 marks out of this for students’ aptitude for and excellence in reading newspaper and books. The General Education Department will notify the guidelines with regard to this decision.

The grace mark will be awarded to the winners of students who win news reading competitions conducted by the Department of Public from the schools to the State Levels.

Simultaneously, it was alleged that library activities in the state’s schools remained stagnant, with the exception of the annual Reading Day event. Furthermore, there are claims that the education department’s promise to hire librarians in schools has yet to be fulfilled.
