IDUKKI: In a move to tackle the issue of plastic pollution, the Kerala government is gearing up to enforce the plastic ban. As part of this initiative, a surprise inspection was recently initiated in the business area of Thodupuzha.
Yesterday, the Thodupuzha Municipal Health Squad carried out a surprise inspection and seized 100 kg of prohibited plastic products from various shops located on Market Road. Following the inspection, notices were issued to these shops, notifying them of the violations.
The determination of the fines to be imposed on each shop will be finalized on Monday. Numerous complaints were received from the region regarding the sale of banned plastic products, prompting the inspection. Department officials have stated that the inspection will continue in the upcoming days.
According to the Health Department, single-use plastic items such as carry bags, cups, paper cups, plates, straws, PVC flex materials, thermocol sheets, and plastic water bottles below 500 milliliters are prohibited. Violators will face an initial fine of Rs 10,000, with repeated violations incurring fines ranging from Rs 26,000 to Rs 50,000.
In the event of repeated violations, the authorities will take legal action, which may include the cancellation of shop licenses.
