Kochi: Sea erosion is making life miserable for the residents of Kannamaly in Kochi. With heavy rainfall continuing to lash Kerala, the sea is rough and has encroached into houses along the coast of Kannamaly. A report said that the residents of the area have begun a sit-in protest demanding that the government construct a seawall to protect their homes.
According to the report, about three hundred houses have been come flooded in the sea attack. The residents are saying that they are spending nights on the terrace and cannot make food in the kitchen. Even their toilets are flooded making life miserable for them.
The residents demand that the government install tetrapods along the coastline to prevent sea incursion. The geobags, which were laid there as a temporary relief have all been proved to be ineffective, said the report.
The residents are saying that they too need tetrapods installed just like in Chellanam, which is nearby. However the government had only completed the first phase of installation of the tetrapod project at Chellanam. The second phase has been in the doldrums for quite some time now.
The residents at Kannamaly have laid siege to the road near the police station to get their demands met. The protesters include senior citizens and children. They are saying even if they fall dead, they will continue with the protests, said the report.
