Idukki: A landslide occurred this morning on the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway in Munnar, causing a halt in traffic. The landslide originated from a mountain adjacent to the road, prompting the district administration to issue an advisory urging commuters to avoid this route.
The affected section of the highway serves as major route for Munnar, witnessing the passage of thousands of vehicles on a daily basis. As part of the national highway construction project, the road was widened in this particular area, necessitating the removal of rocks. The alteration seems to have triggered the landslide on the gap road.
Last year, a similar situation unfolded, leading to a temporary ban on traffic along this route due to landslides.
Despite the completion of the road widening work, landslides continue to pose a threat during the rainy season. Commuters are advised to seek alternate routes until the situation stabilizes and the authorities deem it safe to resume regular traffic flow.
