Kochi: In a significant development, the High Court in Kochi has issued a notice to KR Ajayan, the district leader of CITU (Centre of Indian Trade Unions), in connection with a violent incident against a bus owner in Kottayam. The court directed Ajayan to appear directly in the case of assaulting the bus owner, Rajmohan, while he was under police protection.
Justice N. Nagaresh took this action after reviewing the case, which involved the beating of Rajmohan by Ajayan despite a previous court order to provide police protection amid a labour dispute. The High Court is scheduled to hear the petition on August 2, during which the matter will be further deliberated.
During the proceedings, the High Court expressed strong criticism towards the police for their failure to enforce the court’s protection order. Despite the explicit directive to provide police protection, KR Ajayan allegedly attacked Rajmohan while six police officers were assigned to guard him. The incident occurred while the court order to ensure protection for Rajmohan remained pending.
The case came to the court’s attention based on media reports, and the High Court considered a contempt of court petition voluntarily filed on these grounds. The victim, Rajmohan, had reportedly been assaulted in front of a bus affiliated with CITU following a salary dispute.
The court’s stern response to the incident reflects the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and security of individuals involved in labor disputes. The notice issued to KR Ajayan sends a clear message that any violations of court orders and resorting to violence will be dealt with firmly by the legal system.
The case has drawn attention to the responsibilities of trade union leaders and the importance of adhering to legal processes while resolving labor disputes. The High Court’s scrutiny of the matter underscores the significance of abiding by court directives, and it is hoped that the hearing on August 2 will shed further light on the incident and ensure justice for the victim, Rajmohan.
