Thiruvananthapuram: In a peculiar incident that has raised eyebrows, an AI camera in Varkala, Kerala, fined a biker for scratching his cheek while riding his motorcycle. Sajeed, an ambulance driver from Ramantali, was slapped with Rs 2,500 fine based on the camera’s observation that he scratched his cheek with his left hand while allegedly using his mobile phone.
The incident occurred on the 15th of this month, and the notice claims that the violation took place during the afternoon. Sajeed, however, refutes the charges and maintains that the footage from his mobile phone was in his pocket at the time of the alleged incident. Despite his explanation, the authorities are reportedly not considering his side of the story.
This is not the first time an AI camera has been involved in issuing fines in the region. Previously, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) faced a similar situation when they received a notice from an AI camera for leaving a ladder tied to one of their vehicles. In response, KSEB took an unprecedented step by pulling the fuse on the building where the motor vehicle department’s enforcement wing operates.
The incident involving Sajeed highlights the importance of ensuring the fairness and accuracy of AI-based systems in law enforcement to prevent potential misidentification and unwarranted penalties. The use of AI technology has the potential to enhance surveillance and enforce traffic regulations, but it also requires thorough validation and oversight to avoid erroneous judgements.
