52-day ban on trawling to end tomorrow at midnight; fishermen and boat owners gear up to go to sea

Thiruvananthapuram: The trawling ban which was in effective for 52 days will come to an end tomorrow at midnight. Fishing boats can go to sea for fishing after midnight on Monday. There are no restrictions on the coastlines of Kerala and Lakshadweep.

At Monday midnight, the authorities will remove the chain tied across the bridge over Neendakara harbor in Kollam district, which is Kerala’s biggest fishing harbor.

The fishermen and the boat owners have all geared up for resuming their fishing activities. The repairs and maintenance on the fishing boats have been completed. The procedures to stock ice and diesel will finish by today and tomorrow. A boat owner will incur an expense of Rs.2 lakhs to Rs. 5 lakhs for the maintenance works on the boats.

The migrant workers who go to sea on fishing boats from Neendakara have also started arriving since yesterday. Migrant workers going on fishing boats from Neendakara are mainly drawn from Tamil Nadu.
