Demand grows for action against traffic violating police vehicles

Thiruvananthapuram:  In a bid to ensure accountability and adherence to traffic regulations, a growing clamour for action against police vehicles that violate traffic rules has gained momentum. This call for disciplinary action has come in response to instances where police vehicles, including those of high-ranking officials, have been caught on AI cameras flouting traffic norms.

The Director General of Police (DGP) has taken a resolute stance on the matter, urging district police chiefs to address the issue with gravity. The DGP emphasised that while AI cameras are not intended to hinder police operations during emergencies, adherence to traffic laws is mandatory in routine circumstances.

The AI cameras have recorded numerous instances of traffic violations committed by the police, such as driving without wearing seat belts. Reports indicate that even vehicles belonging to senior officers have been captured in these violations. The ownership of these police vehicles falls under the jurisdiction of the state police. In response to the escalating frequency of law breaches, the DGP has issued a directive to district police heads, urging them to treat the situation with the utmost seriousness.

The DGP’s directive to district police chiefs underscores the seriousness with which the matter is being addressed. The emphasis on discipline and accountability within the police force resonates with the broader goal of maintaining law and order while fostering public confidence.

The concept revolves around imposing disciplinary measures on police personnel who repeatedly incur fines due to AI camera-detected violations. Although AI cameras do not apply to police during urgent situations, adherence to the law is obligatory in regular circumstances. It is projected that the recurrence of such errors by police officers could result in public dissatisfaction with law enforcement. Therefore, in this scenario, unit leaders and relevant authorities are recommended to implement stringent measures.
