Kochi: Ernakulam Maharajas College has taken decisive action by suspending six students in the wake of a disturbing incident where a visually impaired teacher was subjected to insult and mockery. The incident, captured in a video that surfaced recently, has sparked outrage and concern within the educational community. The suspended students have been identified as KSU Unit Vice President Muhammad Fazil, Nandana Sagar, Ragesh, Priyada, Aditya, and Fatima Naflam.
The impetus for these actions was a formal complaint lodged by the Head of the Political Science Department as well as the targeted teacher who endured the offensive behaviour. To thoroughly address the situation, the college administration has appointed a dedicated committee to conduct an in-depth investigation into the incident.
Dr. Priyesh C U, an assistant professor and an alumnus of Maharajas College, found himself at the centre of this unfortunate incident. Due to his visual impairment, he was subjected to derogatory treatment by students who displayed a lack of empathy and understanding. Expressing his dismay, Dr. Priyesh urged that these students acknowledge their misjudgment and rectify their actions.
The teacher emphasised the profound challenges faced by those living with visual impairments, highlighting the unique difficulties they encounter daily. He underscored the importance of creating a conducive learning environment where students appreciate the effort invested in teaching and adapt their behaviour accordingly. Dr. Priyesh stressed that no visually impaired teacher should undergo such distressing experiences in the future.
The incident has prompted introspection among the students involved, with some expressing regret for their actions and expressing a willingness to seek forgiveness. However, Dr. Priyesh maintains that true understanding and rectification are essential, urging the students to comprehend the gravity of their actions and the impact they can have on educators working diligently under difficult circumstances.
