Maharaja’s college administration to take legal measures in visually impaired teacher insult incident

Ernakulam: The administration of Maharaja’s College is poised to pursue legal action following an incident involving an insult to a visually impaired teacher within its premises. The college council convened to address the issue and has decided to file a formal complaint with the police. This development comes in the wake of a widely circulated video on social media depicting the disrespectful behaviour directed towards the teacher.

The internal disciplinary committee of the college had previously announced its intention to investigate the incident thoroughly. As per the decision reached during the college council meeting, the committee has been given a week to submit its findings.

The incident in question revolves around a video where a visually impaired teacher conducting a third-year B.A. Political Science class was subjected to derogatory remarks. The teacher, Dr. Priyesh C.U., an alumnus of Maharaja’s College and an educator himself, faced disparagement from some of the students.

Yesterday, the college took disciplinary action against six students, among them Muhammad Fazil, the vice president of the KSU unit. He stated that, however, when I hurried to join the class, the teacher informed me that the day’s lesson had concluded and the class was dismissed. I chuckled along with the others. Fazil’s contention is that the video was shared on social media with lighthearted intent.

Dr. Priyesh, the targeted teacher, had responded to the humiliating incident. He noted that comprehending the challenges of the visually impaired is something only those who have experienced them can truly understand. He emphasised that students should recognise the effort required to teach an hour-long class without visual cues. Such episodes create undue difficulties during instruction, making it essential for students to exhibit sensitivity and respect.

In his response, Dr. Priyesh expressed his willingness to forgive the students involved in the incident, urging them to acknowledge their mistake and rectify their behaviour. He underscored the importance of fostering a respectful and supportive environment for both students and educators.
