Kampala (Uganda): The observance of the Ramayana month has traversed the expanse of Malayalee communities, extending its influence to various corners of the world. As echoes of this revered celebration resonate across continents such as the Gulf, America, and Europe, it has found a distinctive manifestation even in faraway lands like Uganda in Africa.
In Uganda, where the Malayalee population is relatively small, the heart of the Ramayana month festivities beats resoundingly in Kampala, the nation’s capital. Under the stewardship of Ekta Adhyatmika Samiti Uganda, a dedicated Malayalee organisation, the month-long commemoration of the Ramayana has been flourishing.
Unique in their own right, the Ramayana month celebrations in Kampala have garnered enthusiastic participation from nearly all members of the Malayalee community. The culmination of these festive gatherings unfolded with a grand finale at the Patidar Samaj in Kampala. A multitude of devotees gathered to partake in the Ramayana Parayana ceremony, infusing the atmosphere with devotion and spirituality. The proceedings included a Ganapati Pooja and melodious Bhajans, creating a divine ambiance.
Noteworthy was the enchanting performance of the traditional Thiruvathirakali by Ugandan Malayalee women, adding a touch of cultural grace to the event. Additionally, a significant gesture of compassion took place through the distribution of Karkidaka Kanji (medicinal porridge).
The instrumental figures behind the success of these festivities included dedicated committee members such as Suresh Menon, Shinu, Satish Kumar, Gopinath, Rajesh, Sugesh Pattuvam, and others.
