Kannur: African swine fever has been confirmed in the Kanichar village panchayat. An order has been issued by the District Collector, who is also chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, to kill pigs in farms where African swine fever has been verified, specifically those owned by PC Jincy and James Alakathadam.
The affected area around the infected pig farm spans a radius of one kilometre, while a larger disease surveillance zone with a radius of ten kilometres has been established. Within these areas, the sale of pork and the operation of supply shops are prohibited. Additionally, a three-month ban on pig transportation has been implemented, likely reflecting concerns about disease control and biosecurity within the district.
To prevent further spread, it’s imperative that only pigs originating from disease-free zones are permitted entry into the district. The Collector has instructed the District Health Department and KSEB authorities to offer essential support for the systematic eradication and proper disposal of the affected pigs.
