THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former union minister and BJP senior leader Alphons Kannanthanam has criticized the Kerala state, which is grappling with substantial debt and a financial crisis, for its decision to again borrow funds and expend resources unnecessarily.
He voiced concerns about the potential repercussions that the current economic crisis could impose on future generations. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, he highlighted the escalating financial issues faced by the state, attributing them to inadequate governance.
Kerala finds itself ensnared in a dire economic predicament, oscillating precariously in terms of its finances. Alphons Kannanthanam went on to emphasize that statistical data from 2019 indicate a significant portion of pensioners who were entitled to poverty allowances had been left without it. Alarmingly, this situation led to the passing away of around seventy thousand pension beneficiaries. As it stands, Kerala is currently one of the most debt-ridden states.
Alphonse further stated that while the people of the state are grappling with inflation-induced hardships, the Kerala state government, despite being in debt, is seemingly preoccupied with acquiring additional loans. He critiqued the current crisis’s roots, attributing it to the Left government’s mismanagement.
In response, the state’s Finance Minister, K N Balagopal, directed blame towards the central government for the mounting debt burden that Kerala is facing. He also expressed apprehensions about the state’s potential descent into more substantial debt in the foreseeable future.
