Thiruvananthapuram: The state government’s ambitious initiative of distributing free Onam Kits to the residents of Kerala has hit a roadblock, as the planned distribution has been postponed due to delayed supplies and shortages of essential products. As the festival of Onam approaches, concerns are mounting over whether the distribution can be completed in time.
The much-anticipated distribution of the free Onam Kits was slated to begin today across all districts until 27th of this month through the state’s ration shops. However, the kits have yet to reach the intended distribution points, leaving officials grappling with logistical challenges. Milma, one of the essential suppliers, has faced difficulties in providing the required payasam mix, contributing to the disruption of the distribution process.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister GR Anil Kumar had inaugurated the kit distribution with much fanfare, intending to extend the benefits to AAY (yellow) ration card holders and residents of welfare institutions. This year, due to financial constraints, the distribution was limited to yellow card holders. Welfare institutions were set to receive kits at a ratio of one kit per every four residents. The distribution was supposed to be monitored by Taluk Supply Officers, following lists provided by the Social Welfare Department.
However, the setbacks in securing the necessary items for the kits have cast doubt on the timely completion of the distribution, with the festival of Onam just around the corner. The delay in acquiring goods has raised concerns among ration traders about their ability to fulfil the distribution even within the next few days.
The uncertainty over whether the distribution will be successfully completed within the remaining timeframe has raised questions about the state’s ability to provide citizens with their much-anticipated Onam Kits, which traditionally include an array of essential food items. The kits typically encompass items like tea, chickpea nuts, semiya payasam mix, ghee, cashew nuts, coconut oil, sambar powder, chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, chickpeas, toor dal, and powdered salt.
