Thiruvananthapuram: The state government’s initiative of providing free Onam kits to citizens continues, yet not without its share of challenges. As Onam approaches, the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) is intensifying its efforts to expedite the distribution of Onam kits across the state, starting today. However, a hiccup in the distribution process resulted in delayed delivery in several districts, sparking concerns among the populace.
Yesterday, a setback was observed as numerous districts reported the absence of even a single Onam kit. To counter this, Supplyco has launched a swift distribution strategy in the lead-up to the festival, which is a significant cultural event in Kerala.
The much-anticipated Onam kits arrived on the premises, yet potential buyers were left disappointed as they encountered difficulties in acquiring them, prompting many to return empty-handed. The scarcity of one essential component, Milma’s stew kit, arose due to a temporary suspension in its supply. In response to this issue, the Food Minister has issued a directive for officials to provide regular updates on the progress of kit distribution in each district, starting today.
Partial distribution of the kits has taken place in various regions, including Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad, Kottayam, and Malappuram districts. Assurances from ration shop owners indicate that the kits will reach all districts by this morning and the distribution process will conclude by Sunday. In an unusual move, ration shops will remain operational on Sundays as well to facilitate this process. While the distribution of rice for Onam continues as planned, the distribution of Onam kits has encountered delays.
Supplyco had previously taken the difficult decision to limit the distribution of kits exclusively to 5.84 lakh yellow card holders within the state due to the prevailing severe financial crisis.
The kits typically encompass items like tea, chickpea nuts, semiya payasam mix, ghee, cashew nuts, coconut oil, sambar powder, chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, chickpeas, Toor dal, and powdered salt.
