Palakkad: As the festive fervor of Onam approaches, an inspection conducted by the Legal Metrology Department in Palakkad has brought to light the deviations in quantity and weight of vegetables in various establishments. The inspection, which was carried out in supermarkets, vegetable markets, and duty paid shops, aims to ensure fairness and transparency in commercial transactions during the festive season.
From August 17 to 25, a comprehensive inspection was conducted, resulting in the identification of 85 cases with discrepancies. Xavier P Ignatius, Deputy Controller of Legal Metrology, revealed that a total fine of Rs 3,87,000 has been imposed on those found to be in violation of the prescribed standards.
The rigorous inspection campaign extends to Sundays as well, indicating the authorities’ commitment to upholding consumer rights and maintaining fair trade practices. The inspection team, composed of two inspectors and two assistant inspectors, is slated to continue their efforts until August 28.
Consumers are encouraged to report instances of overcharging for packaged products, weight discrepancies, issues related to Maximum Retail Price (MRP), packaging concerns, and missing date records. This initiative underscores the importance of safeguarding consumer interests and promoting transparency in the market.
In addition to the Legal Metrology Department’s efforts, a specialized squad from the Food Safety Department is also carrying out inspections across the district as part of the Onam preparations. V Shanmukhan, Assistant of the Food Safety Department, revealed that two individuals have been served notices to pay fines. The inspections, which have spanned across various checkpoints including Walayar and Meenakshipuram, have totaled 82 checks to ensure food safety and compliance with regulations.
