THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala state has once again broken its own record for liquor sales during the Onam festival. Recent data released by the Kerala State Beverages (Manufacturing & Marketing) Corporation Ltd (BEVCO) indicates that over the past 8 days, alcohol consumption in Kerala reached a staggering value of Rs 665 crore. This marks a significant increase from last year’s sales of Rs 624 crores during the same period in 2022. Notably, a remarkable Rs 121 crore worth of sales occurred on Uthradam, the day preceding the Thiru Onam function.
The highest sales were conc3entrated at the Irinjalakuda outlets in the Thrissur district, with liquor sales totaling Rs 1.06 crore. Following closely, the Kollam district secured the second-highest position in sales, with a noteworthy Rs 1.01 crore worth of liquor sold.
On the other end of the spectrum, the Chinnakanal outlet in the Idukki district reported the lowest liquor sales figures.
Meanwhile, several social activists have expressed concerns regarding the escalating alcohol consumption within the state. They are asserting that, in order to foster the state’s economic development, the government should explore alternative revenue sources beyond alcohol sales.
