Kochi: Actor Jayasurya took the opportunity to express his concerns and criticism of the state government’s handling of the agricultural crisis during a public event held in Kalamassery, which is the constituency of Minister P. Rajeev. The actor’s candid remarks were made while he served as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of an agricultural festival.
While sharing the stage with the state’s Industries Minister P. Rajeev and Agriculture Minister P. Prasad, Jayasurya seized the moment to shed light on the challenges faced by farmers in the state. In a forthright manner, he touched upon several pressing issues that have been plaguing Kerala’s agricultural sector.
Jayasurya highlighted the unfortunate situation faced by Malayalees, emphasizing that many are forced to consume vegetables tainted with pesticides and other harmful substances due to the lack of proper quality checks. He stressed the urgent need for a robust system to ensure the quality of essential food items like rice and vegetables, asserting that the people of Kerala have the right to access quality food.
The actor also raised questions about the younger generation’s reluctance to embrace agriculture as a profession. He inquired how the youth can be expected to take up farming when they witness their parents struggling and going hungry on important occasions like Thiruvonam, a significant festival in Kerala.
Furthermore, Jayasurya did not shy away from addressing the issue of farmers going on hunger strikes during Thiruvonam due to delayed paddy payments from organisations like Suplico. He highlighted the reality faced by many farmers and called on those who lament the younger generation’s disinterest in farming to reflect on the hardships endured by these agricultural workers.
