Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s Minister K. Krishnankutty has announced that, for the time being, the state will not resort to electricity regulation or power cuts. However, he has called upon the citizens to cooperate by using electricity more sparingly during nighttime hours, emphasising the importance of conservation to meet the growing energy demands.
Minister Krishnankutty urged residents to minimise their electricity consumption during the evening and nighttime hours, suggesting that even simple actions like refraining from using appliances like grinders and washing machines can make a substantial difference. The minister stressed that this call for electricity conservation is a collective effort and should be followed by all.
At present, there are no plans for load shedding or power cuts in the state, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply to the residents. Minister Krishnankutty underscored that the ongoing crisis highlights the need to pay more attention to the production sector. Despite possessing an abundant water resource of 3000 TMC (thousand million cubic feet), only a fraction, 300 TMC, is currently being utilised for irrigation and power generation.
The minister further noted that even discussions about new hydropower projects have become contentious, revealing the need for greater cooperation and consensus in the development of critical infrastructure for power generation.
This announcement comes after the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) recently appealed to the public to reduce electricity consumption during specific evening hours, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., in order to mitigate the risk of load shedding.
