Thiruvananthapuram: As concerns over the Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala persist, health authorities have expanded containment zones in Kozhikode district to curb the spread of the disease. Wards 3, 4, and 5 of Villiappally in Kozhikode and the 13th ward of Purameri Panchayat have been newly declared containment zones. This decision comes after Wards 6 and 7 of Villiappally were initially included in the containment zone.
With this development, a total of eight panchayats in the district have been designated as containment zones. These include:
The declaration of these zones aims to restrict movement in and out of the affected areas and implement stringent measures to contain the virus’s spread. Currently, a total of 702 individuals, including 127 healthcare workers, have been listed in the contact list, indicating the extent of potential exposure to the virus. In these containment zones, only retail outlets ( Medicines) providing essential goods are permitted to operate, ensuring that residents have access to necessary supplies while minimising human interaction.
