Kasaragod: Authorities in Kasaragod district are grappling with a concerning trend of recurring placing stones on railway tracks, perpetrated by children. In the span of just one month, the district has witnessed four such incidents, prompting police intervention and calls for preventative measures.
The incidents have left local law enforcement facing a unique challenge, as the culprits behind these acts are children. Consequently, the police have refrained from taking legal action but have issued a stern warning that stronger measures will be employed to curb these dangerous activities.
In the most recent incident, a small jelly stone was discovered on the Padannakkad railway track last Tuesday. Subsequently, police investigations revealed that the stone had been placed on the tracks by two children who were just seven years old. The children explained that their intention was to witness the noise and smoke generated by the train wheels. Due to the tender age of the children, the police have refrained from filing a formal case against them.
Similar incidents involving children were reported in the previous month. In Pallam, Nellikunnu, and Kalanad, small children were found to have kept stones on railway tracks, while a group of twelve-year-old children engaged in a similar act at Iqbal Gate. Law enforcement authorities have announced plans to raise awareness about the dangers of such actions among households located near railway tracks.
While the immediate response has been one of leniency towards the young culprits, the police have issued a clear warning. If these incidents persist, the children involved may no longer be afforded the same leniency and will face appropriate legal consequences.
