KOZHIKODE: Jitin Babu (32) and his wife, Steffy (32), were arrested in Vadakara for attempting to smuggle 96.44 grams of MDMA drugs in their car. Shockingly, their four-year-old son was with them during the incident.
The couple was arrested during a vehicle search last night while transporting the drugs from Bengaluru to Vadakara for distribution. According to the police, they had purchased the drugs in Bengaluru for Rs 1 lakh, and its market value in Vadakara was estimated to be around Rs 5 lakh.
The investigation team revealed that Jitin Babu had a history of drug smuggling and had been involved in drug sales in Kannur, Kozhikode, and Vadakara. The inclusion of his wife and son in the trip appeared to be a deliberate strategy to create the impression of a family tour and escape from police checking during this smuggling.
The arrests were made following a thorough vehicle inspection conducted by Thotilpalam Inspector Unnikrishnan and officials from the District Anti-Narcotics Special Squad.
The accused were promptly taken to the Thotilpalam police station, where their statements were recorded. Subsequently, they were remanded before the Vadakara Judicial First-Class Magistrate Court. As part of the ongoing investigation, the police plan to seek the court’s approval for the release of the accused.
