Thiruvananthapuram: A fisherman lost his life today after an iron rod from a boat fell on his head in Muthalapozhi .The victim, identified as Nauphal from Puthukurichy, succumbed to injuries sustained during the accident. Despite prompt efforts to rush him to the medical college for treatment, the fisherman could not be saved.
The boat involved in the accident belonged to Shahjahan, a resident of Puthukurichy, who was engaged in fishing operations. The vessel, carrying a total of 38 fishermen, encountered challenging sea conditions, as reported by Marine Enforcement.
Early this year, six fishermen embarked on a risky journey through Muthalapozhi in Thiruvananthapuram and miraculously survived as powerful waves violently tossed and overturned their boat. Official statistics reveal that around 700 accidents occurred over the past decade, resulting in the tragic loss of 69 lives and injuries to over 700 individuals. The coastal community has long expressed concerns about the perilous conditions in the area, emphasising the danger it poses to fishermen who venture out for fishing and urging authorities to address the frequent boat accidents.
