Thiruvananthapuram: The state government’s laziness in Muthalapozhi has drawn sharp criticism, with construction work lagging despite promises made by the Fisheries Department.
Despite the Fisheries Department’s declaration that the equipment for rock removal has been delivered, there has been no commencement of construction. The assurance from the Fisheries Department regarding the completion of construction within two months appears to have been empty, as the machinery transported from Thoothukudi to Muthalapozhi to enhance the depth of Muthalapozhi and facilitate easier access for fishing boats remains unused.
Cranes brought to the estuary for the deepening project have remained idle for the past two months, reportedly damaged without using it. Compounding the delay, the road required to transport the cranes to the Muthalapozhi estuary remains unfixed. The port department cites adverse weather conditions hampering dredging operations in the sea as another factor contributing to the setback.
Promised measures, such as the installation of Himax lights for adequate lighting and the appointment of security personnel on a shift basis, have yet to be implemented.
Moreover, commitments to establish an ambulance system for swift response to potential accidents at sea have not materialised.
