THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: On experimental basis the police in Kerala have introduced a rapid drug analyser to screen individuals for drug use in public. According to reports, this system utilises saliva samples and provides results within five minutes.
The hand-held mobile device, known as the SoToxa Mobile Test System, has been deployed on a trial basis in Thiruvananthapuram city. Depending on its reliability and accuracy, the system may be expanded to other parts of the state.
With the introduction of this rapid analyzer, the police can promptly determine whether an individual has consumed drugs. Until now, the police had been using breathalyzers primarily to identify individuals driving under the influence of alcohol.
A team led by Narcotic Cell Assistant Commissioner E. Balakrishnan conducted trial examinations in the Thampanoor–East Fort area of Thiruvananthapuram.
The rapid analyser is capable of identifying the presence of various narcotics, including MDMA, brown sugar, and cannabis.
City Police Commissioner H. Nagaraju mentioned that such a rapid analyzer equipment typically costs around Rs 15 lakh.
