Idukki: Speaking to the media in Idukki, Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty revealed that there would be a marginal increase in electricity rates. He mentioned that the electricity rates will go up a bit, and it will happen only if people use more electricity. He also emphasised that they need to purchase electricity from external sources.
The minister highlighted the current dependence on external sources for electricity is due to the current weather conditions. He noted, “Electricity has to be bought from outside. But if it rains, we can get rid of this.” The minister’s comments underline the significance of rainfall in mitigating the need for external power procurement.
Currently, there is a plan to raise electricity rates by Rs. 0.17 Paise, with Minister Krishnankutty explaining that this increase is due to the lack of enough rainfall, affecting power generation in Kerala.
The responsibility of setting electricity prices and determining the purchase of electricity from external sources lies with the Regulatory Commission.
