Thiruvananthapuram: Former CITU leader Akhil Sajeev and former AISF leader KP Basith, accused in the fake recruitment case, were remanded to police custody. Akhil Sajeev’s custody period extends to 14 days, while KP Basith’s custody period is set at five days. Both will be sent to Kottarakara jail.
Basith has confessed to the Cantonement Police that he misused the name of Health Minister Veena George’s office to extort money from Haridasan. Contrary to the initial allegations, Basith clarified that Haridasan did not provide money to the minister’s staff member, Akhil Mathew, to secure a medical officer position for his daughter-in-law. Basith admitted to persuading Haridasan to include Mathew’s name in the complaint and even went as far as asserting that Mathew had received Rs 1 lakh from Haridasan.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that Akhil Sajeev extorted Rs 25,000 from Haridasan, and Sajeev’s lawyer friend, Lenin Raj, received Rs 50,000 from him. Both Sajeev and Lenin Raj are now facing charges of ‘fraud’ and ‘impersonation.’
