Ernakulam: A significant drug bust in Kaloor, Ernakulam, may lead to an investigation by the Excise Crime Branch due to its inter-state implications. The Excise Department apprehended a group of four individuals last Friday night, seizing 327 grams of MDMA. The case has revealed connections with people from other states.
The drugs had initially come from Bengaluru, but authorities have noted a concerning trend of narcotics entering Kerala from Himachal Pradesh as well. Considering the scale of the case and the involvement of individuals from different states, the Excise Crime Branch is taking over the investigation. Currently, there is no decision to shift the case to the Excise Crime Branch. The Excise Commissioner will make a decision after reviewing the information provided by the accused.
The arrested individuals, identified as Amir Suhail, K.A. Ajmal, and Elroy Varghese, were found to be dealing MDMA, with prices ranging from Rs 4000 to Rs 7000 per gram. The drug trade was reportedly happening in and around the Kaloor Stadium area.
To curb the rising drug menace, the Excise Intelligence Wing and City Metro Shadow have heightened surveillance. There are indications that substantial quantities of narcotics are making their way to Kochi from major cities across the country.
