Ernakulam: In response to recent controversies surrounding the night entry ban on Marine Drive, authorities have taken steps to enhance nighttime security by installing more surveillance cameras. The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has announced plans to increase the number of street lights and security personnel.
A month ago, the GCDA imposed a ban on nighttime access to the Ernakulam Marine Drive walkway from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. This decision sparked widespread protests. The ban was implemented in response to complaints from local residents’ associations, who alleged that nighttime activities and noise disturbances were disrupting the peaceful lives of those living nearby.
However, the Residence Association Coordination Council also voiced their demand for a reconsideration of the decision to restrict nighttime access and freedom of movement. As of Wednesday, the trial entry ban has been lifted, and a new strategy is being employed to identify and address any troublemakers through increased camera surveillance.
Currently, many parts of the city are already equipped with surveillance cameras. On Monday, a meeting will be held under the leadership of Kochi Mayor Adv. M. Anilkumar to discuss the nighttime entry ban. The GCDA has clarified that their intent is not to shut down Marine Drive but to curb any illegal activities occurring in the area. Furthermore, they are committed to addressing the concerns of residents living in close proximity to Marine Drive.
