Agartala: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart from Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, are set to jointly inaugurate a significant cross-border rail project on Wednesday. The two leaders will formally launch the Agartala-Akhaura Cross Border Rail Link Project at 11 am, using a virtual ceremony, as announced by officials.
This rail link, spanning 15 kilometers (with 5 kilometers in Bharat and 10 kilometers in Bangladesh), is expected to greatly enhance cross-border trade and substantially reduce travel time between Agartala and Kolkata via Dhaka, according to authorities. A trial run of the project is scheduled for Monday at 12 pm and encompasses the construction of one major bridge and three minor bridges.
Presently, the train journey from Agartala to Kolkata takes approximately 31 hours. However, with this new project in operation, the travel time is anticipated to be cut down to just 10 hours. The Indian Railways has allocated Rs 153.84 crore from its budget to expedite the project’s completion, noted an official.
