Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s Food and Civil Supplies Minister, GR Anil, announced that the first working day of every month will be a holiday for ration shops in the state. This decision was made at the food security seminar during the recently concluded ‘Keraleeyam’ gala event. The change will come into effect in December. This change has been made, considering the demand from ration trader organisations.
Ration shops are currently closed on Sundays and public holidays. The Minister approved a new monthly holiday to make necessary changes to the Electronic Point of Sale (e-POS) machine for ration distribution.
The traders need to update the e-POS system to prepare for giving out rations for next month after the current month’s distribution ends. Hence, at present, the distribution of rations starts on the evening of the first working day of the month. This led the traders to ask about this day as a holiday. This development arises from the requests put forth by ration trader organisations.
