Thiruvananthapuram: In a recent discussion on ‘Malayalam Cinema in the 80s’ at the ‘Smriti Sandhya’ event, held as part of the Kerala Assembly International Book Festival in Trivandrum, veteran film producer Suresh Kumar made a notable revelation. He stated that no Malayalam movie has achieved Rs. 100 crore marks, and people are revealing the box office in terms of gross collection.
He made these comments during a debate attended by renowned director Kamal and actor Maniyanpilla Raju.
When a film becomes a hit, these days, it’s making a lot of money. You might hear about the ” Rs. 100 crore club” and the “Rs 500 crore club,” but there’s some truth in it. However, in Malayalam cinema, no film has actually earned 100 crore rupees; they say it based on gross collection. Suresh Kumar said
Suresh Kumar mentioned that ,earlier the film industry depended on the revenue it received from theaters. But now, with streaming platforms like OTT, leading actors are producing their own movies. Suresh Kumar emphasised that the content the film is still the most important factor in bringing people into theatres.
Suresh Kumar also talked about the problems with film reviews. He said he doesn’t mind criticism as long as it’s fair, but he doesn’t like it when reviews turn into personal attacks.
