Thiruvananthapuram: In a concerted effort to enhance road safety awareness among students, a special training programme for teachers is underway in Kerala. The Road Safety Authority has developed a handbook for this initiative, with the National Transport Planning Research Centre overseeing the training process. The programme aims to train 7,000 teachers annually.
Teachers ,in the programme, will teach students up to the tenth grade and have a different handbook for higher secondary levels. Instead of regular textbooks, they will use passages from this new handbook. The handbook also explains how to teach road safety in primary, upper primary, and high schools. The Road Safety Authority printed the handbook, and SCERT helped create it.
Adding road safety lessons to the school curriculum is important to reduce road accidents. Teachers receive special training to teach students about road safety. After this training, teachers will pass on what they’ve learned to other teachers in schools throughout the state.
