Malappuram: The Right to Information Commissioner has initiated disciplinary measures against officials who responded mockingly and failed to provide clear information regarding illicit road construction. Assistant Engineer O Bibin and Head Clerk NS Suja of Vazhayur Panchayat in Malappuram are facing action, with State Information Commissioner A Abdul Hakeem imposing a fine of Rs 12,500 on each.

The road construction in Vazhayur Panchayat, financed through the CMLRRP (Chief Minister’s Local Road Rebuild Project) funds, was determined to be illegal. In response to a Right to Information Act application seeking details on this matter, the officials responded with mocking reply. The commissioner discovered that the officers had engaged in mutual accusations, ridiculing the petitioner without furnishing the requested information. In response to the issue, the RTI sought an explanation from the implicated officials.

Following a review of the explanations provided, the commission issued a final order rejecting them. The order stipulated that both officials must remit the fines to the Treasury by the end of this month; otherwise, the amount would be deducted from their salaries.
