Malappuram: A fight broke out between the student wing members of Congress and its ally Muslim League during an election campaign for Rahul Gandhi held yesterday. The clash occurred between Kerala Students Union (KSU) and the Muslim Students Federation (MSF) in Wandoor, Malappuram. The clash erupted after objections were raised by KSU activists against MSF members for raising the flag of Muslim League and MSF during the campaign.
KSU accuses MSF members for violating an understanding between the parties on using party flags during election campaigns for Rahul Gandhi. MSF members waived Muslim League and MSF flags during a music concert after the election campaign. Scuffles broke out before senior leaders were forced to intervene and calm the situation.
Congress leader MM Hassan had said that parties must not display their flags during election campaign programs of Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad constituency. Hassan told that it was the Congress’ decision not to display the flags, including allied parties’ flags during campaign. However, MM Hassan did not elaborate on why the party took such a decision.
During the 2019 Lok Sabha election, when Rahul Gandhi was campaigning in Wayanad, his road show was filled with flags of Muslim League, which has a strong influence in Wayanad constituency. This had led to some confusion and the visuals went viral on social media. As Muslim League is not well-known outside the state, their flag was mistaken as flag of Pakistan.
