CHENNAI: Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor S Venkitaramanan, aged 92, passed away on November 18 in Chennai.
Venkitaramanan is survived by two daughters, one of whom is Girija Vaidyanathan — a former Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu.
Venkitaramanan served as the RBI Governor for two years, from 1990 to 1992, holding the position as the 18th Governor of the RBI.
Venkitaramanan also served as the Finance Secretary in the Union Ministry of Finance from 1985 to 1989. Prior to his tenure as the RBI Governor, he held roles in the Indian Administrative Service, serving as an Advisor and Finance Secretary to the Government of Karnataka.
Venkitaramanan was born in 1931 in Padmanabhapuram, a small town in Nagercoil, which was then part of the princely state of Travancore. He completed his master’s degree in Physics from University College Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, and earned another master’s degree in Industrial Administration from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA.
