Kochi: The High Court of Kerala has provided clarity on the requirement for smoke tests for BS4 and BS6 standard vehicles in Kochi. Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh clarified that conducting a smoke test is sufficient one year after the registration of these vehicles. This ruling quashed the state government’s notification that mandated a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate after six months of vehicles registration.
The decision comes in response to a plea filed by Kochi resident S Sadananda Naik, who argued that the proposed smoke test after six months goes against the rules in the Central Motor Vehicles Act.
BS, or Bharat Stage, is an emission standard set by the central government to regulate the level of pollutants released from vehicle engines in Bharat. The standards, categorised as BS4 and BS6, serve as benchmarks for controlling toxic substances like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and hydrocarbons which vehicle emissions.
